Automate Bottle Deposit Collection on Shopify

Ten US states require bottle deposits. Germany has Pfand. Canada has provincial programs. If you sell beverages on Shopify, you need to collect deposits — and doing it manually is a nightmare. Canteen handles it automatically.

Manual Bottle Deposits Are a Nightmare

If you've tried handling bottle deposits manually on Shopify, you know the pain. Baking deposits into product prices confuses customers. Creating separate deposit products clutters your catalog. Tracking which states require what amounts? Spreadsheet hell.

❌ Deposits baked into prices — customers think you're overcharging

❌ Separate deposit SKUs — cluttered catalog, checkout confusion

❌ Baking deposits into prices confuses customers and skews reporting

❌ POS gaps — online deposits collected, in-store missed (or vice versa)

❌ Multi-pack math — 6-packs, 12-packs, 24-packs, kegs, cases…

❌ Audit risk — wrong amounts collected = compliance headaches

Canteen replaces all of that with automated rules. Set the deposit amount per product or collection and let Canteen add the right deposit at checkout — every time, automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge different deposit amounts for different states?

Absolutely. Create separate fee rules for each state with the correct deposit amount. Michigan customers see 10¢ per bottle, California customers see the appropriate CRV rate, and customers in non-bottle-bill states see no deposit at all.

How do multi-packs work?

Canteen applies deposits per item in the cart. For a 12-pack priced as a single product, you can set the deposit at the per-pack level (e.g., 60¢ for a 12-pack at 5¢/bottle). For products sold as individual bottles, the per-item deposit multiplies by quantity.

Do deposits work at Shopify POS?

Yes. Canteen works on both Online Store and Shopify POS. Your in-store customers get the same accurate deposit charges — no manual calculations at the register.

Should I charge tax on bottle deposits?

This varies by state. Some states treat deposits as taxable, others don't. Canteen gives you full control — you can configure whether tax applies to each fee rule. Check with your accountant or state revenue department for your specific requirements.

What about keg deposits?

Canteen handles keg deposits, growler deposits, and any other refundable container fee. Set a higher deposit amount ($30, $50, whatever your keg deposit is) and target it to keg products specifically.
